Ex-Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst still looking for new job as move to Turkish giants dramatically COLLAPSES

It appears a major stumbling block arose in negotiations

IT looked for all the world like Giovanni van Bronckhorst would be returning to management this week.

But his proposed appointment as Besiktas' new boss will NOT be happening.

That's because the Turkish giants confirmed the shock appointment of a different manager.

Former Greece and Portugal boss Fernando Santos has been confirmed the new Besiktas gaffer meaning van Bronckhorst's wait for a return to football continues.

Reports out of the Netherlands had suggested the appointment of van Bronckhorst, 48, was pretty much a done deal.

A done deal apart from one key factor.

The reports noted how van Bronckhorst wanted to appoint Jean-Paul van Gastel as his assistant manager.

But Van Gastel is in post as manager of NAC Breda in the Dutch second tier.

Besiktas were willing to pay a sizable fee to prise him away and the coach was said to be keen to make the move.

But NAC Breda were reported as "blocking" the situation and it appears no agreement was able to be forthcoming.

Van Bronckhorst also wanted van Gastel as his assistant at Rangers, but on that occasion his former Feyenoord No.2 was working in China and decided against moving to Glasgow.

On that occasion, van Bronckhorst still accepted the managerial position without van Gastel joining him and Dave Vos was subsequently appointed Rangers assistant manager instead.

It means van Bronckhorst's 14-month wait to return to a managerial role goes on.

That's despite his appointment at Besiktas seeming so likely, that he'd even been linked with a shock swoop to take former Ibrox hero Ryan Kent with him from Fenerbahce.

But it's veteran Portuguese boss Santos who has taken over and has officially been presented as Besiktas' new head coach.

Van Bronckhorst was sacked by Rangers back in November 2022 after just a year in charge.

A dreadful run of form saw him axed just six months after leading the Light Blues to a Scottish Cup triumph and Europa League Final.
