Struggling Forest Green Rovers manager Troy Deeney is reportedly set to call on the help of John Terry and Jermain Defoe.

Deeney, 35, is without a win in the first six games of his managerial career having become player-coach of the relegation-threatened League Two club last month. They now find themselves bottom of the table after three draws and three defeats.

Not only have the results been a concern, but Deeney's outspoken interviews where he's regularly criticised his players have raised question marks about his suitability for the role.

He does, however, have an extensive contact book in football - and according to The Telegraph, he plans to bring in Terry for a defending demonstration and Defoe for a shooting session.

Ex-Chelsea captain Terry was previously assistant to Dean Smith at both Aston Villa and Leicester City, while Defoe is under-18s coach in the academy of former club Tottenham.

The England alumni aren't the only ones to have been contacted by Deeney. He's also reportedly picked the brains of Burnley boss Vincent Kompany and Robert Huth, who's now loans manager for his old side Leicester.

The January transfer has already seen Deeney make three signings, but he has his sights on more. “If we get the centre-half we want then we will be foundationally very solid and can look for our game-changer,” he said.

Rovers lost 2-0 to Harrogate at the weekend, with Deeney publicly calling out ex-Coventry midfielder Fankaty Dabo post-match. “He’s not been good for five, six, seven, eight, nine weeks,” he shockingly told reporters.

“I have just told him in front of everyone – six months ago that kid had a kick to go to the Premier League. Now he won’t get a game in the National League."

He did later apologise to Dabo, adding: “I let my emotions get the best of me at times.” But Deeney was soon infuriating fans further as he appeared on Sky Sports' coverage of QPR vs Watford a little over 48 hours before their next league game away at Mansfield.
