Chris Beesley: No room for sentiment - Pickford has to start

Everton manager Sean Dyche has admitted that Abdoulaye Doucoure and Seamus Coleman are both doubts for the FA Cup third-round replay with Crystal Palace but while the Blues could afford to give their club captain a rest, their top scorer isn’t as easily replaced.

Coleman broke Everton’s Premier League appearance record against Aston Villa on Sunday when he turned out in the competition for the 355th time but while the Republic of Ireland international has been a stalwart for many years now, he has only featured four times this term in all competitions. Dyche says that while Ashley Young – who has occupied the position for most of this season – is back training, this game has come around too quickly for the Blues’ oldest outfield player so Nathan Patterson is the obvious choice to come in.

There is no natural like-for-like alternative to Doucoure, though, with both Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma having deputised for him with various degrees of success, so hopefully the 31-year-old can overcome what his gaffer described as “fatigue” to feature again after returning against Aston Villa. Danjuma looked lost when he tried to play as ‘a number 10’ in the Carabao Cup tie with Burnley but he did well against the Eagles at Selhurst Park and with Dwight McNeil looking leggy after making his swift return when stretchered off in the same game, the on-loan man gets another start.

Joao Virginia also impressed last time out against Palace when featuring for Everton in front of fans for the first time. It’s nice to know he can be relied upon but there’s no room for sentiment from me and with the potential of another Goodison Park penalty shoot-out looming, Jordan Pickford remains in goal.

My team (4-5-1): Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite; Mykolenko; Harrison, Garner, Doucoure, Onana, Danjuma; Calvert-Lewin.

Connor O’Neill: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has to start

Following his miss against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon, Sean Dyche faces a conundrum as to whether or not he sticks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Blues boss could turn to Beto if he wants to freshen things up, as Calvert-Lewin’s struggles in front of goal continue. However, I would stick with the England international in the hope he can play himself into form.

Meanwhile, Dwight McNeil did look fully fit when he came off the bench against Unai Emery's side, but with Abdoulaye Doucoure a doubt, he may well have to start with Arnaut Danjuma playing in the number 10 role.

My team (4-4-1-1): Pickford, Coleman, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Garner, Onana, Danjuma; Doucoure; Calvert-Lewin.

Paul Wheelock: Only one change has to be made

Seamus Coleman remains Everton's best right-back. That was proved again on Sunday when he overcame a testing start against the flying Alex Moreno to produce a typically polished performance. However, we shouldn't expect the captain to play every game and tonight feels a perfect time to give another opportunity to Nathan Patterson.

And that, if Abdoulaye Doucoure is passed fit, is the only change that Sean Dyche needs to make tonight. Joao Virginia was excellent in the first game at Selhurst Park but with another home tie in the fourth round up for grabs, Jordan Pickford must return between the posts. To Dyche's credit, the Blues boss has gone strong in the cup competitions this season.

Dwight McNeil is part of Dyche's strongest side but I don't think there's any rush to bring him back into the line-up, especially if Doucoure has recovered from his knock. I felt for Arnaut Danjuma on Sunday. I thought he was brought off too early and hopefully he'll get another chance from the start this evening.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was also hooked around the hour mark against Aston Villa after missing a golden opportunity to end his goal drought. But I think we saw enough of Beto to suggest why Calvert-Lewin, even with his current struggles in front of goal, has to start when he is 100%.

My team (4-5-1): Pickford; Patterson, Tarkowski, Branthwaite; Mykolenko,, Harrison, Garner, Doucoure, Onana, Danjuma; Calvert-Lewin.
