Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon is due to join Brentford on loan for the rest of the season after having his stay at Manchester United ended early.

The left-back was brought in by Erik ten Hag on deadline day to cover for long-term injuries at left-back but was deemed surplus to requirements this month and so United activated the break clause in his season-long loan.

Luke Shaw has since returned from his muscular problem - albeit has not played since Christmas - while Tyrell Malacia is not far off making his own comeback following major knee surgery over the summer. Reguilon made 12 appearances for United during his four-month stay.

His last appearance came in the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on December 30 when he earned a one-minute cameo, and his last start had come in the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth over a fortnight earlier.

Brentford have suffered a long-term injury setback themselves with left-back Rico Henry ruled out for a significant period and so have turned to Reguilon, Sky Sports outlines. It adds that there will be no obligation or option to buy within his deal.

It is thought Brentford wanted a young development signing but had to bring in Reguilon due to limited funds and options this month. United travel to Brentford on March 30 when they could face their former teammate.

Towards the end of his stay at Old Trafford, Ten Hag had preferred to use Diogo Dalot over natural choice Reguilon at left-back when Shaw and Malacia were not available. Shaw pulled out of the Boxing Day win over Aston Villa with an injury and has since been unwell.

He could return against Newport County in this month’s FA Cup Fourth Round clash while Malacia was initially targeted for a comeback by the end of January. Victor Lindelof - who has also played at left-back this term - is currently recovering from surgery on an unspecified injury.
