Newcastle United star hit with fresh injury setback as loan spell takes turn for worst

Newcastle United loanee Harrison Ashby can't catch a break at present with the Swansea City star injured again

Harrison Ashby has been hit with a another setback during his loan spell away from Newcastle United after picking up a fresh injury for Swansea City.

Ashby left Tyneside on a temporary deal over the summer as Tino Livramento arrived to act as Kieran Trippier's backup at right-back. His loan stint at the Swans started swimmingly before a period out of the starting XI was followed by a serious hamstring issue.

Ashby returned to Newcastle for treatment before Christmas but was returned to Wales last month as he returned to the fold for Luke Williams' side, impressing down the right channel. However, he is facing another spell on the sidelines after picking up a fresh injury in recent days.

“He has a muscular problem so he is going to be a few weeks,” said Swansea boss Williams. “We are not going to be able to put an exact time on it yet.”

Ashby's 2023 arrival from West Ham United saw many tip the youngster to eventually replace Trippier as Newcastle's first choice right-back further down the line. Now, that prediction isn't looking as promising.

Ashby will return to Newcastle in the summer before Eddie Howe makes a decision over his next move. However, Livramento has impressed following his own arrival at St James' Park at the start of the season, with former Southampton man proving a fan-favourite in the north east.

Ashby netted a late winner for Newcastle during their pre-season win over Rangers at Ibrox. However, the 22-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance under Howe following his arrival 13 months ago.
