Eintracht Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmoller has issued a grovelling apology to Donny van de Beek after leaving the Manchester United star out of his European squad.

The Dutch midfielder joined the German outfit on loan until the end of the season after a rotten campaign at Old Trafford. Despite the move, Van de Beek’s career has slumped to new lows.

It was announced that he was left out of Frankfurt’s 25-man squad for the knockout rounds of the Europa Conference League. Head coach Toppmoller has since explained that decision and revealed that he felt compelled to apologise to Van de Beek.

“He’s only played a total of four games in the last two years, so it won’t happen overnight,” he said. “But I have 100 per cent confidence in his quality, he’ll definitely help us in the second half of the season. I told Donny that I was sorry but also what I expected from him now.”

Since joining Frankfurt, Van De Beek has made four appearances, three of those being starts. However, he shone in a friendly against the club’s under-21 side with a goal and two assists.

Toppmoller believes that performance indicates that the former Ajax star is ready to contribute for his side for the remainder of the season. He added: “That showed me that he can handle the decision well. He is ready to take on the challenge.”

After being left out of Eintracht’s European squad, he will sit out for Thursday’s clash with Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. His next chance to show his talents will then come next weekend with an away trip to Freiburg.

Van de Beek had made just two appearances for Man United this season ahead of his switch to Germany. He made cameo appearances against Crystal Palace in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Speaking after his move to Germany was made official last month, Frankfurt's director of football Markus Krösche said: "Donny van de Beek is a perfect match for our playing style and is a key part of our team's puzzle.

“He brings lots of international experience with him that our young players can benefit from. Donny exudes goal threat and should help our attackers to get into promising positions."
