La Liga flops Almeria are 'the new 07/08 Derby' – and winless team could break record

La Liga’s rock-bottom side Almeria could be set to break Derby County’s 2007/08 Premier League lowest-ever points record as they remain winless

La Liga side Almeria could be set to break Derby County’s lowest-ever points tally record of 11 during the 2007/08 Premier League season.

Derby fans can start to dream that their humiliating record of the worst season in the history of Europe’s big five leagues, could be broken in May. Almeria have picked up just six points in 23 games so far this season – all of those points coming from draws – and could eclipse the Rams’ record.

Almeria recorded 41 points last season in La Liga, but only survived the drop by just one point at the expense of Real Valladolid who were relegated with the highest number of points in over a decade. But this season has seen the Rojiblancos fail to get into any kind of form and need a miracle to survive relegation.

Defeat away at Valencia last Saturday saw Almeria match the undesired record of longest winless start to a La Liga season – which previously solely belonged to Sporting Gijon in 1997-98 after 23 games. But another loss at home on Monday night against 5th place Athletic Bilbao will see them break that record.

Another unwanted milestone they will match if they fail to beat Bilbao is the longest-ever winless run in Spain’s top-flight, currently held by Levante during a 27-game streak over the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. Having failed to win any of their last three games of the previous campaign, Almeria will match that record if they fall short again.

Almeria are currently on their second permanent manager of the season with former Bilbao coach Gaizka Garitano taking charge in October following Vicente Moreno’s miserable seven-game spell at the start of the season.

Despite everything pointing to them being completely out of their depth in La Liga, the club do boast former Real Madrid youngster Sergio Arribas and ex-Manchester United youth star Largie Ramazani alongside household names in La Liga Leo Baptistao and Jonathan Viera.

And they have proven hard to beat on a number of occasions this season against the league’s top sides. Real Madrid needed a 99th minute winner from Dani Carvajal to beat them 3-2 in January at the Santiago Bernabeu, while second place Girona were lucky to 0-0 draw last month as well.

A late Sergio Roberto winner also saw Barcelona squeeze past the basement side at home and Atletico Madrid scrapped past them with a 2-1 win late last year. Almeria could soon get the rub of the green, or could just continue to throw games away with a toothless attack and calamitous defence – conceding the most in the league with 51 and scoring the fourth-lowest in the division.
