Gattuso and Lorenzo Amoruso share a special bond stemming back to their time together at Ibrox.

Lorenzo Amoruso has opened up on his time at Rangers in a revealing Italian TV interview - explaining how his time in Glasgow changed his life for the better.

And the former defender also lifted the lid on talks with his 'brother' Rino Gattuso that led to the fiery Italian leaving the club. Amoruso and Gattuso spent a season together at Ibrox in the late 90s and their partnership on the pitch is fondly remembered, however brief it was.

Gattuso was then in the early stages of a career that saw him go on to become an AC Milan great, and he starred as a 19-year-old, showcasing some of the fire and brimstone that came to define him. For better and for worse, he had moments that will live long in the memory, and he left after a single season at Ibrox - joining Salernitana, where his career skyrocketed, after Walter Smith's exit in 1999.

Amoruso, who served as Gattuso's 'older brother' during his time at Rangers, says that move only came about after HE advised him to leave. Gattuso is in the headlines in Europe after being sacked as Marseille boss earlier this week and his old pal Amoruso only had fond things to say.

He told TV Play in Italy: “He’s always been genuine, I went through a very bad period in my career where I got injured and lived at his house as a guest of his family.

“I have a special relationship, of respect and sympathy, I was the one who advised him as an older brother to leave Rangers because the coach didn’t see him, also moving my agent to go to Salernitana where his career took off.”

As far as his own experiences at Rangers go, Amoruso was glowing. He joined from Fiorentina in 1997, spending his peak years at Ibrox and winning three league titles in the process.

“It was a fantastic experience, however it opens your head," he said. "You go to a different culture. You compare yourself with different nationalities, footballers who came from all over the world.

“It’s incredible to enter into a way of communicating, relating to fans and the press that is completely different from that in Italy where there have been unresolved problems for many years. It was a piece of life that changed me, increased me and made me improve in many ways.”
