‘Why?’… Darren Bent says Sir Jim Ratcliffe will not sign £231,000-a-week midfielder for Manchester United

Darren Bent has given his verdict on whether or not Sir Jim Ratcliffe would try to sign Frenkie de Jong for Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

United have previously been linked with the Barcelona and Netherlands international midfielder.

So, what has Darren Bent said about Frenkie de Jong and Manchester United? Let’s take a look.

Darren Bent doesn’t think Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong

Well, Darren Bent does not think that Manchester United will try to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker made the comments about De Jong when talkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein suggested the Barcelona midfielder as a potential target for United under new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The Guardian reported in March 2023 that the Red Devils wanted to sign De Jong in the summer of 2023.

United manager Erik Ten Hag reportedly wanted the Dutchman at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 as well, but a move did not materialise.

Bent said about de Jong and United on talkSPORT: “I think that the ship has passed with that one. I think that ship has passed.

“I don’t know why Man United would want to go after a player who just didn’t want to go to your club in the first place. I don’t think he did. I never heard him give an interview saying he wants to go.”

My View: Manchester United could be able to sign Frenkie de Jong

In my opinion, Manchester United should consider a move for Frenkie de Jong in the summer transfer window.

If United manager Erik ten Hag wanted to sign De Jong before the Red Devils brought in Casemiro from Real Madrid, then I do not think that the interest of the Dutchman will have waned.

De Jong is still only 26 now. His best years are ahead of him. Xavi is leaving as the Barcelona head coach at the end of the season, so there could be changes in the squad.

I believe that if Ten Hag still wants De Jong, then United should at least try to get a deal done with Barcelona for the £231,000-a-week (SalarySport) midfielder.
