Jurgen Klopp provides grim Liverpool injury update with fears of missing rest of season
Jurgen Klopp gave a grim update on Thiago Alcantara’s injury with concerns he may miss the rest of the season and have played his final game for the club
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp provided a grim update on Thiago Alcantara’s injury with the midfielder potentially missing the rest of the season.
The 32-year-old has played just five minutes of football this campaign after he made a brief and unsuccessful comeback from injury against Arsenal earlier this month. Thiago returned to the team after almost an entire year out with a hip problem, only to sustain a muscle injury on his return.
Thiago’s woes have added to the mounting injury list at Melwood with the likes of Alisson, Trent Alexadner-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Stefan Bajecetic, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez all missing the Carabao Cup final triumph on Sunday with injuries.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Southampton, Klopp gave a grim update on the Spaniard. “Yeah, there’s no timescale. I don’t know, to be honest,” he said. “It’s a couple of things [that] he has to do now from a medical point of view and then I don’t know if that will then mean that he can play again [this season].
“That’s not a short-term thing, that’s why I’m not really in the subject. It’s not that he might be in training in two weeks or stuff like this, so that’s why I’m not 100 per cent in it. I cannot say more about it, to be honest.”
Liverpool fans – do you think the club should offer Thiago a new contract? Let us know in the comments section.
Thiago’s problem is further worsened by his contract expiring at the end of the season. The 46-time Spain international’s four-year contract he signed when he joined the Reds in 2020 from Bayern Munich is in its final months and could mean he has played his last game for the club if his deal isn’t extended.
The seven-time Bundesliga and four-time La Liga champion with Barcelona is yet to lift the league title at Liverpool, and even if Klopp does bow out with a second league success, he's likely to miss out on a medal due to a lack of appearances. His time at Anfield has been plagued by injuries and he could be set for an unceremonious finish to the campaign and his Liverpool career.
