Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has struggled to build form this season due to injury troubles.

He broke a metatarsal in his foot while playing for England at the European Championships last summer and returned in September. But after scoring in the 6-1 win over Brighton at Villa Park, Ramsey suffered a reoccurrence of the injury.

He came off the bench in only two of Villa's first 12 league games before returning for a second time in the crucial victory over Tottenham in north London. Since the end of November, Ramsey has started nine of the club's last 15 league games.

The 22-year-old was beginning to show signs that he was ready to play an important role in Villa's quest to secure Champions League football. He rediscovered his fitness and confidence in recent weeks, which makes his latest injury blow at Kenilworth Road bitterly frustrating.

He sustained the injury on the same foot he had problems with in the summer and at the start of this season. Ramsey tried to carry on after suffering the injury, but was later replaced by Morgan Rogers.

After Villa's 3-2 win, Ramsey was seen leaving the stadium with his left foot in a protective boot and was due to undergo an assessment. Emery will give an update on Ramsey's condition on Wednesday evening out in Amsterdam, ahead of Villa's Europa Conference League round of 16 first leg clash with Ajax.
