Peter Schmeichel fires reverse 'Fergie Time' jibe at Jamie Carragher as Liverpool argument ensues

Ex-Manchester United and Manchester City goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel hit back at Jamie Carragher as he bemoaned the stoppage-time that allowed Liverpool to clinch a last-gasp win against Nottingham Forest.

Drawing 0-0 last Saturday, just as it seemed the Reds would open up the opportunity for City and Arsenal to snatch away the lead of the Premier League, they managed to claw a victory with virtually the last touch of the game. Alexis Mac Allister floated a ball into the penalty area when Forest failed to clear, and the slightest of touches from Darwin Nunez sent the away section into pandemonium.

Some uproar followed, owing to two factors. First, at the opposite end of the field, referee Paul Tierney gave a drop-ball to Caoimhin Kelleher following a head injury to Ibrahima Konate, instead of giving it to Callum Hudson-Odoi outside Liverpool's 18-yard box. Play resumed, then accounting for more stoppages in play, more was allowed to unfold before 38 seconds over the allotted additional time, the winner was scored.

Reds attentions may have quickly shifted to a Europa League first leg clash with Sparta Prague, though in his first opportunity to pick up on last weekend's incident Shmeichel engaged in a playful back-and-forth with Carragher during CBS' Champions League coverage.

The former Liverpool vice-captain told his old rival: "Good job there wasn’t VAR when you were playing!", to which Thierry Henry added: "Especially at Old Trafford!"

Schmeichel - whose ex-employers United sit sixth in the standings - retorted: "Guys, at the moment your clubs are getting everything, eight minutes added onto Liverpool’s game the other day and they scored in the ninth."

"Peter, we call that Fergie time!", Carragher hit back - a concept coined during Sir Alex Ferguson's era at United, when it was argued they would receive greater lengths of injury-time when losing.

Still not impressed with the recent Reds result, the Dane claimed: "You should call it Kloppy time!"

As mentioned, Liverpool have a Europa League Round of 16 away leg to attend to on Thursday evening, though ultimately the result at the City Ground crucially ensured that they hold the initiative before welcoming City to Anfield this coming Sunday in the Premier League.
