Cameroon suspend 62 players who 'lied about their age' including 17-year-old AFCON star

The Cameroonian FA, FECAFOOT, have suspended 62 players for concealing their true age including Wilfried Nathan Doualla - who shocked fans at AFCON claiming to be 17-years-old

The Cameroonian FA has suspended 62 players for concealing their true age.

The players have been ruled ineligible to compete in the upcoming play-off's for the MTN Elite One - Cameroon's top division - according to local media. Clubs that have players banned now have 72 hours to appeal the decision.


One such player who has been banned is Wilfried Nathan Doualla, who caused a stir at AFCON earlier this year when fans discovered he is 17 years old. Football fans were shocked, with Doualla's looks appearing way beyond his tender years.

Fans in England had compared Doualla to Luke Littler, the teen darts superstar who looks like he's in his mid-30s. Douala, who is now suspended from playing for Victoria United, was the youngest member of Rigobert Song's 27-man squad at AFCON.

Cameroon was rocked by an age scandal at the turn of the year, as 32 players called up to an under-17s tournament failed “age tests” - suggesting they are older than they claim to be.

Speaking ahead of AFCON, Bambe Wanneh Giovanni, a Cameroonian football journalist, admitted to The Athletic age fraud is a problem in his home nation: "We’ve had so many cases of age fraud.

"A player gets scouted when they are 17 or 18 — the ages clubs really want to get talents to build them up. When they get past that level of 17 or 18, they wouldn’t get a chance to play in Europe."
