James McClean has been ridiculed for hitting out at a Tranmere player following Wrexham's 1-0 defeat to the Merseyside club.

The Irishman sat the game out due to suspension, but still found a way to get involved in the post-match argy-bargy. A video recorded by a jubilant Rovers fan - showing unused Tranmere sub Jean Belehouan going bonkers in front of the away end at the Racecourse Ground - did the rounds on social media after the game, and McClean took issue with it.

Re-posting the clip on Instagram, the 34-year-old wrote: "Absolute wally, not sure what's more embarrassing, him giving it large whilst being an unused sub during the game or the fact that he was an unused for them."

In response, one fan snorted back: "Don't know what's more embarrassing the fact James McClean is triggered by a game he never played in or the fact an unused sub has rattled him."

Another laughed: "He's a bad little helmet him," while a third fan seemingly confusing his idioms wrote: "Cannot stand the guy. Always happy to take it, but can't stand it when it's thrown at him."

Tranmere's Luke Norris grabbed the only goal of the game after just eight minutes to deal a blow to Wrexham's promotion hopes. The result leaves Ryan Reynolds' side five points adrift of League Two leaders Mansfield, though that gap could increase to six points if second-placed Stockport win both of their games in hand.

That said, the Dragons are still on course to land their second-success promotion given they're third in the table with eight games to go. But with just 13 points separating Stockport and 12th-placed Morecambe, it's still very much all to play for.

McClean joined Wrexham in the summer and has scored three goals in 31 games in all competitions. He's spent over a decade in English football, turning out for the likes of Sunderland, Wigan, West Brom and Stoke. He also has more than 100 caps for Ireland, and is their fifth-highest appearance-maker of all time.
