Sunderland AFC to allocate 3,000 standing spaces at Stadium of Light in multi-million pound refurb
The Sky Bet Championship side will introduce 2,000 standing spaces in the Roker End, as well as 1,000 in the North Upper Stand.
Sunderland AFC are set to install 3,000 safe standing spaces to the Stadium of Light as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment of the ground. The Championship side is set to introduce 2,000 standing spaces in the Roker End, as well as 1,000 in the North Upper Stand.
A new playing surface and under-soil heating will also be installed over the summer break. The Black Cats moved to the ground back in 1997, waving goodbye to the old Roker Park where they had played their games since 1898.
And the club claim that the investment to the former Monkwearmouth Colliery site will have a 'transformational impact on the matchday experience'.

Chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus told SAFC's website: "Today, we’re delighted to announce that we are continuing a significant period of investment to develop the Stadium of Light, with the next phase set to complete before the start of the new season.
"These upgrades signify a dramatic shift in our approach to matchday experience and each development will bring lasting benefits to our loyal supporters. The improvements we are making will enhance matchday now and in the future and we can’t wait to experience them side by side with our fans when we return to the Stadium of Light for the new season."
A new PA system and floodlighting will also be installed under the programme - while a partnership with Sunderland City Council will make the stadium the first in the UK to be 5G-enabled by next year.
