Newcastle United have just 10 games left of the current season with Eddie Howe's side still hoping to qualify for Europe.

In a season of thrills and spills, United were unable to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League knockout stages and went out of both domestic cup competitions at the quarter-final stage. Injuries have badly affected the campaign so far for Howe's men and the reality is the bar was arguably set too high last season when the Magpies finished fourth.

Each week players are given a rating out of 10 for their performances in isolation in that particular match. But this is not an average rating across the season, this is a rating for their efforts as a whole for the 2023/24 campaign so far and their appearance tally from all competitions. Here's how the players have rated so far.

Nick Pope

Appearances: 20

Clean sheets: 7

Rating: 9

Last seen in action back in December before suffering a shoulder injury and being forced under the knife. Pope kept notable clean sheets away to AC Milan in the Champions League after facing a barrage of goal attempts and also kept Man City at bay in the Carabao Cup. Pope's last appearance came with the keeper on a clean sheet against Man United in the Premier League.

That day Newcastle were sitting in fifth place in the top-flight with Pope on 40 saves in total in the Premier League. They had 26 points on the board then after just 14 matches and have since collected just 14 points in the next 14 games.

The belief for many observers is Pope's style of play, with the ability to rush out, is integral to Eddie Howe's approach and he gives the defence confidence more often than not. Is it a coincidence that since Pope was injured, Newcastle have struggled for clean sheets and slipped down the table from fifth to 10th?

Martin Dubravka

Appearances: 21

Clean sheets: 6

Rating: 8

At 35, Dubravka came in calmly to take over from Pope after his shoulder injury back in December. It's been far from easy for Dubravka after the Slovakian was left exposed by his defence on numerous occasions this season.

He also had to cope with Kieran Trippier's loss of form, Sven Botman's injury struggles and Dan Burn's series of errors. For all that, Dubravka has a decent shutout tally and has made 59 saves in the Premier League and kept the scores respectable in other games.

Loris Karius

Appearances: 1

Clean sheets: 0

Rating: 6

The former Germany Under-21 international has appeared in just one game when he was thrown in at the deep end away to Arsenal. That night, like Dubravka, defensive woes unfolded around him and he was beaten by his own defender in Sven Botman to set the tone. Has hardly had a chance and is likely to leave at the end of the season.

Kieran Trippier

Appearances: 36

Rating: 8

Assists: 10

Goals: 1

The England right-back has been hit with a calf injury this season and is hoping to be back for the last 10 matches. Despite Trippier suffering a winter blip in form, with some errors that led to goals, he has still been a valuable member of the squad.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe battled to keep him when Bayern Munich came knocking for his services in the January window. That's no surprise as he's weighed in with 10 assists and a goal this season.

Emil Krafth

Appearances: 12

Rating: 6

Assists: 0

Goals: 0

The Sweden international is a steady battler and always willing to step in when needed without causing a fuss. Signed a new deal earlier this year and will continue to be a back-up member of the squad.

The highlight of his season has undoubtedly been his performance at centre-back at Old Trafford in the 3-0 win over Man United. That night he found himself as part of the lyrics in a terrace chant that is a real favourite on away days.

Tino Livramento

Appearances: 30

Rating: 8

Assists: 1

Goals: 1

The Londoner has had to wait patiently for his opportunity this season but when he has played he has usually impressed. Trippier was the star man in the Carabao Cup early rounds against Man City then Man United, pulling off an audacious assist for Miguel Almiron in the 3-0 win. Just eight Premier League starts so far as he waits patiently for opportunities at left-back and right-back.

His superb run and finish in the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers summed up what he can offensively, but he has also been excellent at the back too at times.

Fabian Schar

Appearances: 39

Rating: 9

Assists: 2

Goals: 4

The Switzerland international has been an ever present in the Premier League this season and has never let his high standards drop. Even after being shunted on to his so-called weaker side, during Botman's injury woes, Schar has hit all the right notes.

Without him, the mere prospect of a European place would be over by now. Highlights include his wonder strike against Paris St-Germain in the 4-1 victory in the Champions League, his double strike at Aston Villa in a 3-1 win and his stunner away to Nottingham Forest.

His recent champagne performance against Wolves, when he had a hand in all three goals, summed up why he is talked about in the same regard as Phillipe Albert. A candidate for player of the season.

Jamaal Lascelles

Appearances: 25

Rating: 7

Assists: 0

Goals: 1

The club captain's role has changed in the last couple of seasons with Lascelles part of squad rotation these days. This season has been more prosperous than the last for the Derby-born star and injuries to Botman have given him his opportunity.

Probably had one of the best games of his career against PSG in the 4-1 win while there have been other highlights such as the 4-1 win over Chelsea, in which he scored, and the 1-0 victories over Arsenal and Man United. Struggled in other games such as Spurs (a), Everton (a) and Bournemouth (a).

Has a 64% success rate with tackles this term and has won 64 duels, losing 50. Will get a run between now and the end of the season and can end it on a high.

Sven Botman

Appearances: 22

Rating: 6

Assists: 2

Goals: 2

The Dutchman's form has been badly hampered by a knee injury this season which has reflected in a much lower score than last term. Newcastle medics opted against a knee operation earlier in the season which didn't pay off for the 24-year-old who is now ruled out until potentially December.

Started the season well enough in the Champions League and the Premier League but was injured on the day he scored in the 8-0 win over Sheffield United. Then missed 10 matches in the Premier League and did not return looking like the same player.

Only tasted wins in the top-flight in three starts and his form plummeted in away games at Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City in the FA Cup. A class act when fit but any player will suffer when trying to play through ACL problems.

Dan Burn

Appearances: 33

Rating: 7

Assists: 2

Goals: 4

It's been a tough season for Dan Burn but there are some mitigating circumstances as far as the 6ft 7in defender is concerned. The loss of Joelinton in front of him as an effective shield has been costly.

His campaign started off brightly enough with a goal against PSG and he has popped up with important goals against Fulham in the Premier League and the cup. But at times there have been long calls for Burn to be replaced with either Lewis Hall or Livramento.

Despite losing one on ones and being targeted by opposition down the flanks, he has generally shone with blocks and clearances. Indeed he has made 40 headed clearances and 77 general clearances this season.

Burn is not as bad as some critics have made out but his copy book has been blotted by some blistering attacks when his pace levels has been exposed.

Paul Dummett

Appearances: 4

Rating: 7

Assists: 0

Goals: 0

Has never let anybody down when called upon with his performances in the Carabao Cup against Man City and Man United reflective of a decent individual mark. Just four appearances this season and four minutes of action in the Premier League.

He deserves more game time and it will be interesting to see if Howe gives him any extra minutes on the back of Botman's injuries. Has always been fit and available for selection for the majority of the season.

Matt Targett

Appearances: 7

Rating: 6

Assists: 0

Goals: 0

His season has been hampered by a hamstring injury picked up away to Manchester United. Had a good pre-season but was then asked to play second fiddle to Burn.

Lewis Hall

Appearances: 8

Rating: 7

Assists: 0

Goals: 1

The 19-year-old has been one of the most talked about players this season without barely kicking a ball in the Premier League. Howe has defensive concerns over the youngster and has not been convinced with what he's seen in training.

Attacking wise, Hall has shown what he can do, not least with a cracker in front of the Stretford End in the Carabao Cup against Man United. Needs to play more in the final few games.
