Joey Barton has been branded a “clown” and “obnoxious” for criticising Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink’s role in the England set-up.

Since being sacked by Bristol Rovers in October, Barton has unleashed a string of toxic rants against figures in the game and beyond. He has been particularly derogatory about female pundits and women’s football in general.

Barton has now taken aim at former Chelsea and Leeds striker Hasselbaink, who is part of Gareth Southgate’s coaching team.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, after England’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil, Barton wrote: "Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink as assistant. Isn’t he a Dutchmen? Sacked by QPR and Burton Albion. What’s he doing anywhere near the England national team." He also included a baseless hashtag about tokenism in the tweet, which was rightfully derided by X users.

Although Hasselbaink was sacked by Burton last year, he also won promotion from League Two with the Brewers in 2015. When he left for QPR the following season, Burton were top of League One. After leading the R’s to a 12th-place finish in the Championship, he was sacked the following season.

After returning to Burton in 2021 and keeping the side up against the odds, he resigned in September 2022 with the Brewers at the foot of the table. Fans were quick to highlight Barton’s own chequered managerial record, which saw him let go by both Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers.

One said: "Sacked by Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers. What you doing commenting on management at international level?" A second added: "Joey Barton is an obnoxious t*****.

A third agreed and wrote: "Sacked by Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. What does this guy know about football coaches?" While a fourth added: "How can someone like him comment on international management after being sacked at the lower levels himself."
