Ex-Premier League footballer makes Sunday League debut – but can you guess who it is?

An ex-Premier League player laced up their boots for the first time in a decade for Caversham United of the Reading & District Sunday League to celebrate Sunday League Day

An ex-Premier League star made their Sunday League bow for Caversham United on Sunday League Day.

The inaugural Sunday League Day took place on, you guessed it, Sunday (24th March), the day after Non-League Day. And it was extra special for those in attendance at Caversham United's Reading & District Sunday League clash.


A familiar face was among those playing as Reading cult hero and ex-Prem star Dave Kitson made his debut for the Sunday League side. Kitson netted both of Caversham's goals as they played out a 2-2 draw with Rose & Thistle.

Speaking to Reading Today, Kitson said: "It's really dear me to, it's where I started my career in Sunday League." Kitson, who took the morning off from coaching duties for The Dave Kitson Academy, was playing his first competitive match in ten years.

Sunday League Day is a new concept to promote Sunday League football across the UK, piggybacking on the success of Non-League Day in recent years. The objective is to raise the profile of Sunday League football and drive interest and participation.

It's been a busy couple of months for Kitson, who was named as Nauru's new national team manager and international ambassador earlier this month.

Nauru is a tiny island country in Micronesia, northeast of Australia.

Nauru Director of International Development Gareth Johnson said: "He [Kitson] genuinely cares about the project. One of the reasons for such a high profile appointment is to help the game, not just in Nauru, but the whole region."
