The midfielder won the Premier League, Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup before leaving to sign for Brighton.

He was named on their bench for their clash on Sunday and showed his love for Anfield on his return to the iconic ground.

"It's absolutely amazing coming home, I love coming back here," he told Sky Sports.

"I do call it home, great fond memories here. I'm used to playing here, we've picked up a few good results in the last few years."

However, fans on social media were confused by the comments that came just before kick-off, with one on X saying: "Crying how can you say this an hour before kick off."

"Strange interview to give when you’re about to play against them," added a second.

"Bro is on the bench for Brighton speaking like this," added a third.

Despite then also admitting he wants Liverpool to win the Premier League, he insisted he remains committed to Brighton winning all three points.

He added "Of course it's going to be a huge challenge for us [handling the atmosphere at Anfield].

"The title race is really heating up, of course I'm desperate for Liverpool to win the league and go far in the other competitions.

Simon Jordan and Graeme Souness debate whether Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi has what it takes to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager

"I still think it's possible if they can maybe lose one more game and still win the league, that's what I'm aiming for today unfortunately. We've got our own fight this season and we want to make Europe again."

Brighton took the lead inside the opening two minutes with Danny Welbeck's stunning strike before Luiz Diaz equalised for Liverpool.
