Newcastle have been rocked by confirmation club captain Jamaal Lascelles has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), just days after fellow defender Sven Botman sustained the same problem.
Lascelles was forced off 17 minutes into Newcastle's dramatic 4-3 win over West Ham on Saturday.
The club captain had been restored to the starting line-up after Botman underwent surgery in the international break with an ACL injury.
Newcastle have now confirmed Lascelles has also sustained an ACL problem, with the defender set to join Botman in being ruled out for between six to nine months.
'Newcastle United can confirm that club captain Jamaal Lascelles suffered a rupture to the ACL in his right knee during Saturday’s victory over West Ham United,' a Newcastle statement read.

Lascelles is expected to be ruled out for between six to nine months with the knee injury

The injury comes days after fellow defender Sven Botman underwent surgery on his ACL injury
'After seeing a specialist consultant, he is expected to undergo surgery next week and will be out for 6-9 months.
'Everyone at NUFC extends their best wishes to Jamaal for a full and speedy recovery.'
Newcastle had confirmed earlier this month that the club had triggered a one-year extension to Lascelles' contract until June 2025.
Lascelles has played 26 times this season amid an injury crisis at Newcastle, with the captain covering for Botman.
Botman missed three months earlier in the season after damaging ligaments.
Newcastle confirmed during the international break that Botman was to undergo ACL surgery for sustaining a problem in the same knee.
The Magpies saw Emil Krafth, who came on for Lascelles, and Miguel Almiron also suffer injuries in the 4-3 win over West Ham.
