Arsenal star Frida Maanum collapses in Women's League Cup final against Chelsea

Arsenal faced Chelsea in the League Cup final at Molineux Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the Arsenal forward collapsed in injury time

Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum collapsed on the pitch during the League Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Norway international appeared to get onto her knees off the ball in Arsenal's half and tumble over in the third minute of injury time at Molineux Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It wasn’t until Chelsea’s Niamh Charles and Arsenal’s Katie McCabe shouted at official Cheryl Foster that the game was halted and help arrived from the touchlines. Both teams were called to their respective benches as a number of medical emergency personnel piled onto the pitch.

A member of staff then made an X-shape with his arms, signalling the arrival of a stretcher. Maanum was given oxygen through a mask the entire time she was being treated, which spanned almost 10 minutes. The BBC commentary team later confirmed Maanum was stable and being looked after.

Arsenal also confirmed that Maanum was conscious and stable. They posted on social media saying: "Frida is conscious, talking and in a stable condition. She will continue to be monitored closely by our medical team. We're all with you, Frida."

Play resumed for the final minutes with Alessia Russo brought on to replace Maanum, though it wasn't long before Foster blew signalling the end of regular time and the start of extra-time.

Chelsea remain in the hunt for an historic quadruple in Emma Hayes' final season with the club, while Arsenal are bidding to spoil Hayes' sending off by retaining their Conti Cup title from last season. The Blues started the better side on Sunday but the Gunners have looked razor sharp on the counter. Both teams struggled to carve open any real moments of quality in the final third, while Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton has pulled off a series of superb saves.
