Plymouth sack Ian Foster just three months after leaving role as Steven Gerrard’s no.2

Ian Foster has been sacked as Plymouth Argyle boss less than three months after taking the role, the club have confirmed.

Neil Warnock was among the names being considered as his replacement, however director of football Neil Dewsnip will lead the team until the end of the season supported by first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell.

Foster took charge of the Championship club having previously worked as Steven Gerrard's number two in Saudi Arabia.

The English coach worked alongside the Liverpool legend at Al-Ettifaq before stepping out on his own to take charge of the Pilgrims in January.

Unfortunately things have no gone to plan with Plymouth plummeting down the Championship table since Foster replaced Steven Schumacher who left to join Stoke.

The club were positioned 18th in the Championship at the time and seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The final straw for Foster came on Easter Monday when Plymouth fell to a 1-0 home defeat against Bristol City.

That result has left the club sitting perilously close to the relegation zone and just one point point above third-bottom Huddersfield.

Since taking charge, Foster led Plymouth to just three victories in the league with the last one coming five weeks ago on February 24th.

Chairman Simon Hallett said: “Ian was hired through a thorough and extensive recruitment process and his coaching credentials really stood out when making the appointment.

“But we have to balance long-term stability against short-term decisions, and we have given Ian as long as possible to see if results could improve.

“Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case, and we feel now is the right time to make a change to give us the best chance of securing survival.

“The Green Army have been incredible in recent weeks, as ever, and we need you all now to continue that support as we embark on the final weeks of the campaign with Neil and Nance in charge.

“Together we can achieve what we set out to achieve at the start of the season.”
