Eric Dier: Bayern Munich defender eyes place in England squad at Euro 2024 - 'I'm that level of a player'

Published 09/04/2024 at 18:13 GMT+1

Eric Dier believes that his recent form is good enough to have him in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the upcoming European Championships. Dier, who has 49 senior caps for the Three Lions, has not played for his country since the 2022 World Cup, where he came on as a substitute against Senegal in the last 16. Now at Bayern Munich, Dier has made 11 appearances since his January arrival.

Eric Dier has claimed that his form is good enough to place him in the reckoning for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.
Dier, now playing at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich with his former Tottenham Hotspur colleague Harry Kane, was deemed surplus to requirements in north London by new manager Ange Postecoglou, with Micky van de Ven, and then Radu Dragusin in January, signed to bolster Spurs’ central defensive ranks.
That was in spite of Dier impressing under Postecoglou’s predecessor, Antonio Conte, and since, the versatile defender has made himself part of the furniture at Bayern, managed by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.
He has had to compete with some of Europe’s top central defenders for starts at the Allianz Arena, including Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano, and Kim Min-Jae.
, Dier has insisted that he hit his best form playing under Conte at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and has continued on that same vein since joining Bayern.
"Since the World Cup, I wouldn't say that I've had any dip in form," Dier said.
"I'm playing the best football of my career since [Antonio] Conte came [to manage Tottenham in 2021] and I've carried it on since.”
The versatile defender, who can also play in the holding midfield role, has 49 caps for England, and he is fully intent on increasing his tally at this summer’s European Championships.

"People think that I'm 37 or something, but I'm 30 years old and am nowhere near the end of my prime and imagine that this will be my prime," Dier said.
"I want to be a part of the England set-up and I believe that I should be a part of it, that I'm that level of a player."
Dier returns to the capital this evening to face Arsenal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions quarter-final, which will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
