Jim Goodwin wants a picture-perfect finish against Partick Thistle to keep his son happy with the Championship trophy.

The Dundee United boss and his team will be presented with the title tonight and it will be the chance for them to share their moment with their nearest and dearest. Goodwin - who has been named as the Championship manager of the month for April - has a photograph with his wife and two daughters when he lifted the League Cup at St Mirren as a prized possession.

That was before his son, James, was born and he has reminded him regularly that he has felt he has been left out of the picture - quite literally. Goodwin confirmed: “The best picture I have had in my career was on the pitch with my two daughters after we won the League Cup at St Mirren. My son hadn’t been born yet so he’s been desperate to get a picture of us having won something.

He sees the picture of me with the girls and the trophy every day at home so he’s always asking when it’s going to be his turn. It’s a big thing for him so I’m really, really looking forward to getting one done with him and the girls, albeit they’re a lot older now!

It’s really important to cherish these moments as players because there are so many fantastic people who go through their careers and don’t win anything.”

The Irishman has told his players to make the most of the occasion but also to pick up the points, as the 11,000 United crowd will have paid good money to come and see their team. Goodwin added:“We spoke to the group this morning about not taking things for granted and appreciate what they’ve achieved.

“When you’re a younger player it’s easy to do that. I know from my own experience, I had a little bit of success early on in my career in Ireland and then won the league when I went to Scunthorpe.

“I was 24 then and that was the only thing I’d won as a senior player, but had to wait another eight years until winning the League Cup with St Mirren. So the message to the players was don’t take it for granted and don’t let anyone take away from what you’ve done by talking it down.

“So I want them to really celebrate it on Friday night.”
