Why John Lundstram suffered Rangers red card 'rush of blood' that could have left Celtic star with 'broken leg'

Neil McCann thinks Lundstram was still reeling from putting Celtic 2-0 up when he went flying in on Alistair Johnston.

Neil McCann reckons John Lundstram was still reeling from his Rangers own goal and THAT'S what caused him to fly into his red card challenge on Alistair Johnston.

The midfielder poked the ball past Jack Butland to inadvertently put Celtic 2-0 up at Parkhead following Matt O'Riley's opener. Cyriel Dessers pulled one back, but Lundstram gave Philippe Clement's team a mountain to climb when he caught Johnston studs up above his ankle. Ref Willie Collum initially booked Lundstram, but after being told to have another look by VAR Steven MacLean, he decided on a more severe punishment.

And McCann is convinced that Lundstram's desperation to make up for his OG was behind his rash decision making. He told Sportscene: "That's a broken leg. If his foot doesn't get away from the floor, that's a broken leg. And Alistair Johnston is entitled to put his leg in there. Normally you get your body between ball and man so he knows he's just going to try and protect the ball.

"But Lundstram's just got a rush of blood to the head. There's no case for it not being a red card for me. I think there's an intent to go and get the ball, but when you're lunging at that speed...

"I think he's just been so emotional trying to get back into the game, probably after his initial mistake to put Celtic 2-0 up. He's gambled and read it really well, but at that point in time you need to be absolutely certain you can get this, and I don't think he was anywhere near it. It's absolutely the right decision to be called to the monitor and upgrade that to a red."
