Kylian Mbappe: Luis Enrique says Paris Saint-Germain will ‘get even better’ without ‘club legend’

Published 12/05/2024 at 11:01 GMT+1

Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique believes the future is bright for the Ligue 1 champions despite Kylian Mbappe's impending exit. Mbappe will leave PSG following the expiry of his contract and is expected to join Real Madrid ahead of the 2024/25 season. However, Enrique has stayed positive about the future of the club. "My aim is to be stronger next season. We'll get even better," he said.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique insists that the Ligue 1 side “will get even better” once Kylian Mbappe has left the club this summer.
Mbappe confirmed his decision to depart at the end of the season on Friday, with the Frenchman strongly linked with a blockbuster move to Real Madrid.
Despite losing the services of Mbappe, who has scored 255 goals in 306 games during his time in the French capital while winning six Ligue 1 titles, Enrique remains adamant that the future is bright for the Parisians.
Ahead of Mbappe’s final home game against Toulouse on Sunday at Parc des Princes, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, the former Spain boss gave a glowing reference of the “club legend.”
“All I can say is marvellous things about Kylian Mbappe as a footballer and person,” Enrique said on Saturday, the day after Mbappe officially announced his intention to leave.
“I understand his decision. He has been here for seven years and as a club legend. He has given everything to this club, and this club has given him everything as well.
“I wish him all the best for the future. I have been proud to have him in this team. He has helped us and is a leader, and he has done so with a smile on his face.”
Mbappe signed for PSG from Monaco in 2017 for €180 million - which made him the most expensive teenager of all time - and will leave as a free agent when his current deal expires at the end of the season.
With his contract soon coming to its conclusion and no sign of the superstar being willing to extend his stay, it has been expected for some time that Mbappe would leave PSG this summer.

On the forward’s impending departure, Enrique added: “These are things that we have known for a long time, it was only made public yesterday. But it doesn't change anything in terms of our general outlook. Everything will stay the same.
“Regardless of those who are here or who are absent, my aim is to be stronger next season.
“PSG will continue to be a great team and we'll get even better. We will bring in players with strong mentality and players who identify with the club, that's how life works.”
