He is calm in the box and instinctive, and he understands what’s going on. He doesn’t rush or snatch at the ball. It’s a brilliant finish. It’s incredible. I don’t think people will really understand it for a few years until it has been and gone.
“Hearts did a lot to get him here and then put their faith in him. He has been a brilliant pro, a good leader, and his goal record over the two seasons here is unbelievable. He’s now getting recognition with the awards and the international scene. But he deserves every bit of it.”
As Shankland celebrated his landmark, Saints also basked in the glory of returning to Europe for the first time in 37 years. Dundee’s defeat to Rangers the previous night sealed it, but proud gaffer Stephen Robinson said: “I was delighted with that! I turned the TV off at half-time and back on with three minutes to go.
“It’s for the whole club. This achievement has been 37 years in the making. We said we’d give the fans a team to be proud of two-and-a-half years ago.
“I am glad I’m not in the first rounds of the League Cup, because I tend to lose those! We’re delighted to be in Europe. It gives us an opportunity to progress, make more money for the club and continue to build here.”
Saints signed Shaun Rooney, but Robinson hinted last night was farewell for others and said: “The boys on loan will go back. Charles Dunne, Keanu Baccus have been absolutely fantastic for me. These players will move on and they will with our very best wishes.”
