VAR saves day in League Two play-off final following ‘disgraceful’ dive by Crewe player

VAR is being used in the EFL play-off finals this season and Crawley are thankful for it.

The League Two play-off final between the Red Devils and Crewe at Wembley on Sunday demonstrated just why the technology can benefit the game.

In the second half, Crewe's Chris Long ran through on goal and was one-on-one with goalkeeper Corey Addai.

Long knocked the ball past the Crawley goalkeeper and took a tumble, with the referee pointing to the spot.

VAR got involved and replays showed there was zero contact and the decision was rightly overturned.

Fans were quick to point out on social media at just how bad the dive was.

One person wrote: "That’s a disgraceful dive there."

Another said: "Why would you dive like that when there’s a great chance to score and there’s VAR in operation and will clearly overturn that decision."

A third wrote: "VAR has just overturned a blatant penalty dive by the @crewealexfc player yet the VAR haters still call for it to go. Blinkered."

Crawley were leading 1-0 at the time thanks to Danilo Orsi's superb 41st minute goal, where he slotted home with the outside of his boot.

They assured their promotion to League One when Liam Kelly scored in the 85th minute.
