Glen Johnson says Liverpool are now letting go of a player ‘every top team needs’

The new era at Liverpool begins.

Jurgen Klopp has left the building and Arne Slot has now replaced him.

Liverpool fans still probably need some time to take this all in because it was unexpected and they haven’t been in this situation for a decade.

Klopp himself has done everything he can to try and welcome Slot to the club, including chanting his name after the win over Wolves on the final day of the campaign.

You would assume that the Dutchman has already started, in some capacity, especially with the summer transfer window around the corner.

A lot of eyes will be on who the Reds bring in and how much money Fenway Sports Group (FSG) put on the table for their new manager.

But you feel who Liverpool sign will be as important as who they let go, with some names already confirmed to leave.

When Klopp said his goodbyes over the weekend, Thiago Alcantara was also given a send-off after four years at the club, some think the transfer from Bayern Munich was a mistake.

The 33-year-old only played five minutes of football this term and will leave at the end of June upon the expiry of his contract.

Glen Johnson feels Liverpool missed his brilliance in the middle of the park and players like that are ‘hard to come by’, as he told Squawka.

The former right-back added that ‘every top team’ needs a player like Thiago ahead of his departure.

Thiago Alcantara leaving Liverpool

On whether Liverpool missed having Thiago in midfield this season: “Yeah, definitely. If you’ve got a fit Thiago, every team misses that, and those players are hard to come by,” said Johnson.

“But, sadly for him, he couldn’t stay fit and then couldn’t get game time and couldn’t have an effect on the team, or help the team at all.

“But, in terms of a fit Thiago, that’s what every team needs, or every top team anyway.”

Who else will leave Liverpool?

Whilst the out-of-contract players will depart, fans will be wondering and questioning who else will join them.

Liverpool are hopeful of handing Trent Alexander-Arnold a new deal, whilst talk of Saudi Arabia-linked Mohamed Salah continues to rumble on.

You feel these senior players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, are crucial to Slot settling in.

It’s going to be very difficult for him to challenge for the Premier League title straight away, even Pep Guardiola struggled to do that in his debut campaign.

You could argue that winning a trophy and maintaining Champions League football will be the top of Slot’s list when the new season begins in August.
