‘Like prime Gattuso’ - Paul Scholes heaps praise on Manchester United midfielder in FA Cup final

Scholes was quick to hail one Manchester United player who impressed him during the FA Cup final triumph over Man City.

Paul Scholes has compared Sofyan Amrabat to Italian great Gennaro Gattuso following his shift in Manchester United’s FA Cup final win over Man City.

The Moroccan played the full 90 minutes and finished with a pass accuracy of 92.6 per cent in what is expected to be his final game for United. The midfielder is on a season-long loan from Fiorentina but United are unlikely to trigger his £21m buy-out clause.

Amrabat has enjoyed a resurgence in form over the last few weeks but his overall output since his deadline day arrival has underwhelmed, United having paid an initial £8m for his loan spell.

Scholes was impressed by Amrabat’s performance at Wembley, after the 27-year-old was selected to play ahead of Casemiro, who could also leave the club this summer. Former England and United star Scholes took to Instagram to share his praise of Amrabat after full-time.

Scholes likened him to Milan legend Gattuso, who was known for his ability for sweeping up attacks and quality defensive midfield play. Over the top of the photo of Amrabat lifting the FA Cup, he wrote: “Like a prime Gattusso [sic] today.” A final decision over Amrabat will be made in the coming weeks.

United will be looking for a new midfielder this summer, as well as a centre-back and attacker. Numbers would be needed in the centre of the park should indeed Amrabat not be brought back and Casemiro be sold.

Only four players - Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana - are exempt from offers with Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Anthony Martial seeing their contracts expire next month.
