Nemanja Matic is pleased with Manchester United forward’s international snub

One former Manchester United midfielder believes that England are making a mistake not bringing two key forwards to the tournament in Germany.

Gareth Southgate had the difficult job of deciding who to cut from his 30-man squad for the tournament in Germany and some key names are set to be missing from the Three Lions Squad.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is one of the key names set to miss out after the Englishman was omitted from the squad. James Maddison is also set to miss out as he has been cut from the squad and has returned home.

However, the omission of Jack Grealish, who was key for England during the Euro 2020 campaign, has seemingly caused a stir.

Matic on Grealish and Rashford omission

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford failed to make it into the 30-man squad for the tournament and that has caused some controversy.

After what has been a poor season for the United academy graduate, Rashford excelled in the FA Cup final against Manchester City after the squad announcement and will have a summer of recovery at Old Trafford.

Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic believes Southgate is making a mistake with Rashford’s and Grealish’s omission.

“I would always like to have players like Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish in the team,” Matic said on X. “Players who can decide the game with one move! Not selected/good news for us (Serbia).”

Matic’s Serbia are in the same group as England in the group stage and will be hoping to cause an upset in Germany.

Rashford and Grealish omission the right call

Both Rashford and Grealish have performed for Southgate in the past but have simply not hit the levels that they are capable of this season and were therefore rightly dropped from the team.

Despite Rashford’s electric performance in the FA Cup final, the English winger has been way too inconsistent, which is a far cry from his superb performances during Erik ten Hag’s first season, where he scored 30 goals in all competitions.

As for Grealish, the City winger only scored three goals in 20 Premier League appearances and has been overtaken in the first team by Jeremy Doku, Southgate was right in his decision.
