England manager Gareth Southgate is facing a defensive nightmare ahead of Euro 2024 after further injuries during their defeat to Iceland.

The Three Lions were beaten 1-0 by the visitors at Wembley on Friday night, after Jon Thorsteinsson's first-half strike crept into the corner of Aaron Ramsdale's goal.

It was John Stones and Marc Guehi who started in the heart of defence for England, with usual first-choice Harry Maguire missing out on the final squad due to injury.

However, England's injury problems quickly worsened after Stones was forced off at half-time after colliding with one of Iceland's players.

The Manchester City centre-back was spotted with medical staff at Wembley, after being subbed off, before Southgate suggested he'll 'probably' recover in time.

Speaking Stones' injury scare, Southgate said: 'We think he is probably OK. We didn't want to take the chance.'

Ezri Konsa replaced Stones at the break and Joe Gomez is another option at centre-back, but Southgate has a cause for concern ahead of England's opening game of the tournament against Serbia on June 16.

There was a further issue at centre-back, with Brighton's Lewis Dunk missing the game due to a knock.

Stones had started the game alongside Marc Guehi, who was making just his eleventh appearance for England.

Guehi required treatment at one stage in the second half, after being struck in the head by the ball from close range, but the Crystal Palace defender was able to continue.

Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah was left out of the final squad for the tournament but was still named on the bench against Iceland.

After taking on Serbia, England will subsequently face Denmark and Slovenia in their remaining group stage fixtures.
