Nicolo Barella: 'Proud' midfielder extends Inter Milan contract until 2029 - 'I never had any doubts'

Inter Milan's Nicolo Barella insists he never considered leaving the club after signing a new long-term contract.

The 27-year-old helped the club win a 20th Serie A title this season.

He has now been rewarded for his efforts by putting pen-to-paper on a deal that runs until the end of the 2028/29 campaign.

And the midfielder says he is thrilled to pledge his future to the club.

"I am extremely happy and excited to sign the extension of my contract with Inter for so many years," he told the club's official website.

"I never had any doubts: I believe in this project and, above all, I wanted this signature to arrive before the European Championship."

Barella started his career with Cagliari, for whom he made his professional debut as they were relegated from Serie A in 2014/15.

He would help them return to the Italian top flight a year later, and also spent time on loan with lower league side Como before establishing himself as a first team regular.

By 2018, the 27-year-old had won his first international cap, and the suitors were beginning to circle.

He eventually moved to Inter in 2019, initially on loan, before making the transfer a permanent one the following summer.

Since heading to the San Siro, he has racked up 235 appearances and helped the club lift the Scudetto twice and the Coppa Italia in 2022 and 2023, while they have also won the Italian Super Cup on three occasions.

"I am really proud to be able to defend the colours of this great club for a long time," he continued.

"My desire is to continue on the path of success that we have undertaken with the group and the coach in recent years.

"We want to grow more and more to give more joy to our fans. With them we have lived unforgettable moments, and I am sure that many others will come.

"Now, I'm focused on the European Championship with Italy, we'll meet again soon at the resumption of the season.

"I can’t wait to start again in front of the wonderful Nerazzurri audiences, all together for Inter.”

Barella is part of the Italy squad at Euro 2024.

Luciano Spalletti's side are looking to defend the trophy they won three years ago at Wembley, beating England in the final on penalties.

They get their campaign under way against Albania on Saturday, June 15.
