Roy Keane has Scotland sinners in his crosshairs as flawed plan filleted and McGregor warned to 'use his head'

Scotland shipped three goals in a calamitous first half at the Allianz Stadium.

Callum McGregor was on the end of a scathing assessment from Roy Keane, with the Celtic captain's role in Scotland's disastrous first half against Germany singled out by the Manchester United legend.

The Dark Blues found themselves 2-0 down inside 19 minutes at Euro 2024, with some shoddy defensive play complimenting the German's ability to cut open Steve Clarke's men at will. Captain Andy Robertson was slow to close down Joshua Kimmich who then picked out the unmarked Florian Wirtz to guide a shot past Angus Gunn for the opener. Jamal Musiala then gave McGregor the drop inside the box to lash home the second. And that incident caught the glare of both Keane and a weary Graeme Souness.

Things got even worse for the Scots two minutes before the interval when Ryan Porteous was shown a straight red card by VAR for a challenge on Ilkay Gundogan inside the box, with Kai Havertz confidenty stepping up to make it 3-0 from the spot. Clarke's defensive 5-4-1 formation did not impress Irishman Keane, who questioned Scotland's levels of intensity in the tournament opener.

Speaking on ITV's live coverage of the game, an unimpressed Keane said: "The players aren't switched on and don't have that intensity. People are getting caught out with a square ball on the edge of the box 10 minutes into the game. Everyone thinks with five at the back that you have got plenty numbers, but no one is doing there job. I think the keeper should save it too, 100 per cent."

The former Sunderland boss then took aim at Hoops skipper McGregor, who was left for dead by Gundogan and then Musiala for the second goal. He added: "Look at McGregor here, you cannot gamble in the middle of the park against these players. There is no need. Stay goal side. He is an experienced player, use your head.

Souness echoed that sentiment. He said: "Great turn from Gundogan, McGregor is not near him there. He puts Havertz in, when he pulls it back, he (McGregor) has actually run past him. It's scary stuff."
