Campbell's career spanned two decades with his most memorable playing spells coming at Highbury and Goodison Park, before he later became a pundit.

He was a regular on TalkSPORT alongside McCoist and cohort Alan Brazil, and also appeared on the likes of Sky Sports.

At Everton, Campbell earned the nickname Super Kev, similar to McCoist's popular Super Ally moniker.

McCoist, 61, recalled that Campbell was never without a smile and always made time for people.

He said in a heartfelt post on Instagram: "My thoughts and prayers are with Kevin's family and friends at this extremely sad time.

"Kev was a regular on Talksport with myself and Alan Brazil. He always had a smile on his face and always had time for a chat.

"He will be sadly missed.

"RIP Kev."

Everton, for whom Campbell scored 39 times in 151 appearances, said in a statement: "Everyone at Everton is deeply saddened by the death of our former striker Kevin Campbell at the age of just 54.

"Not just a true Goodison Park hero and icon of the English game, but an incredible person as well - as anyone who ever met him will know.

"Kevin was adored by everyone at the club. All of us are thinking of his friends and family at this difficult time.

"Rest in peace, Kevin."

Campbell also played for Nottingham Forest, Trabzonspor and West Bromwich Albion in his career.
