MARCO REUS bid an emotional farewell to Borussia Dortmund at the Champions League final earlier this month.

Where the German legend moves on to now has yet to be revealed.

But the Scottish seaside is probably not top of the list - as much as Ayr United would love to have him.

Unlikely at best. Impossible, probably.

But that's exactly what fans of the Honest Men, and casual transfer observers thought had happened on Saturday.

Perhaps it was the fuzzy heads from the German drubbing for Scotland on Friday night, but for a second or two it seemed Scott Brown HAD done the unthinkable.

But on closer inspection, it's much more mundane - but impressive nonetheless.

Ayr have brought in midfielder Marco Rus from Coventry as their fifth signing of the summer.

Note, no 'e'.

Instead of a 48-time capped German superstar with more than 400 appearances for BVB pitching up at Somerset Park, it's a 21-year-old Romanian youth international with loans at Universitea Cluj, Hereford and Chorley - twice - on his CV.

But fans certainly had to do a double-take when the signing was announced.

One reply spoke for many which read: "I thought that said Marco Reus."

Another added: "I cannot describe the shock I had for about 2 seconds there."

Others joked they hadn't noticed the spelling difference.

"Was great for BVB," wrote another.

A fourth quipped: "Dortmund to Ayr's a bit of a downgrade."

And another joked: "Two-year deal for a 35-year old? Madness!

Rus left Coventry to join Scott Brown's side ahead of a pre-season schedule which includes a friendly against Celtic then Premier Sports Cup group games with Falkirk, Stenhousemuir, Buckie Thistle and Dundee United.

And Coventry fans were none too pleased to lose him. Especially with another year still to run on his deal.

One said: "We were looking forward to Marco coming back to Cov. Ahh well.. All the best Marco."

Another added: "Very decent young player. Not quite sure why Coventry City released him, as he was one of the better players in our U21/development side."

Brown has also managed to recruit Scott McMann from his cup opponents Dundee United.

The 27-year-old has agreed a two-year deal after his Tayside contract ran out.

McMann starred for Jim Goodwin’s side as they gained promotion back to the top flight, but wasn’t offered a new deal.
