Football fans have joked Stephen Warnock's broadcasting career flashed before his eyes when commentating for the BBC.

Warnock, 42, was providing colour commentary for BBC 5 Live during the 2pm kick-off between Serbia and Slovenia on Thursday (June 20). The snoozefest suddenly kicked into life in the second half, prompting his colleague Lee Blakeman to tell a joke.

Blakeman said: "And Slovenia will have a corner... and just like that, Stephen Warnock, it's come alive!" The ex-Liverpool man responded: "It has come to life, and thank f...," he started to say, before quickly stopping himself.

He continued: "Thank goodness for that!" However, his slip of the tongue was caught by football fans on social media: "Stephen Warnock’s BBC career just flashed before his eyes," one fan joked.

"Shane Warne once referred to a batsman having t***ed it on live Sky commentary but managed to keep his career," a second pointed out. And another added: "Saved it at the very last moment!"

Slovenia had taken a shock lead through Žan Karničnik in the 67th minute - and the European minnows looked like they were on their way to all three points. However, ex-Real Madrid man Luka Jovic had other ideas, powering a header home in the 95th minute.

Serbia managed to find the net when they turned on the pressure, unlike against England - earning their point of Euro 2024.

Slovenia are now looking forward to clash with England, who were underwhelming in their math with Denmark later on during the evening. The Three Lions escaped with a point, sending them top of Group C ahead of Denmark.

England, Denmark and Slovenia can all stop top the group on the final matchday next Tuesday.
