Ralf Rangnick appeared to fire a dig at England and their Euro 2024 rivals when he criticised the excitement levels at this summer's tournament.

His Austria side, who had impressed during the group stages as they finished top ahead of France, were tipped as dark horses but ended up losing in the last 16 to Turkey on Tuesday night. It means their run is over despite producing some eye-catching football.

Rangnick, whose reputation outside of England remains high, had got a tune out of his team and joked that his side were always watchable - whilst other nations will have put people to sleep with how they played.

He didn't name anyone specifically but it was evident who he was pointing towards - the Three Lions among them. France too, despite being joint favourites pre-tournament, have only scored three times and two of those have been own goals.

Rangnick said in the aftermath of Austria's loss - which was also another highly entertaining game: "I've seen other games when it was difficult to even stay awake and that was not the case in our games."

Those who've watched England have been less than impressed as Gareth Southgate struggles to find a winning formula from his immensely talent squad. The Three Lions have largely used the same players to start games across their four outings with performance levels failing to improve.

Southgate has resisted calls to mix up his starting XI despite having a wealth of options. The likes of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon have been under used and Gary Neville admits the time is now for changes if England want to make an impact at the Euros.

He said: "We were woeful and we've been woeful now for four games. Not even in extra-time have we played particularly well. We drew Slovakia onto us and they were unlucky at the end. We've got to change something dramatically now. I've played with Gareth Southgate and I know him. He's a great guy and he's got massive integrity, but he will realise tonight that he was so close to the edge. Very close to the edge."

He also added: "Getting over the line and winning is all-important in tournaments, but if you think you can go through a month of a tournament playing like we are doing and get through it to the end, I think is unrealistic."
