MANCHESTER UNITED have agreed to sell midfielder Donny van de Beek to LaLiga side Girona, according to reports.

And the Red Devils will recoup just over £400,000 of the £40m they paid to sign him in 2020.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal could rise to just over £4m if performance figures are met once Van de Beek joins for an initial paltry fee.

The Dutchman, 27, joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2020.

He had starred alongside the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt in an Ajax side that had reached the Champions League semi-final the year before.

But his time at United did not live up to expectation.

In 2022, he was loaned to Everton in the January transfer window and went on to make just seven league appearances for the Toffees.

After another injury hit season at United, he was loaned to Bundesliga side Frankfurt last year.

The deal included an £8.5million option to buy but the German side opted not to activate it after he made just eight league appearances for them.

According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal is agreed between United and Girona.

But Van de Beek still needs to agree personal terms with the side.

Girona experienced a fairy tale season last time out, finishing third in LaLiga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

That means they and Van de Beek would be playing Champions League football next season.

They are part of the City Group umbrella, and have been given clearance to play in the Champions League alongside Manchester City next season despite their ownership.

Van de Beek has made 62 appearances for Manchester United, scoring two goals and making two assists.
