Move over Welcome to Wrexham and Ryan Reynolds... this is Firhill and Brian Graham.

Shooting on a feature-length documentary around Partick Thistle has begun after attracting interest from America. Academy Award winner Charles B Wessler, whose past releases include Dumb and Dumber as well as There’s Something About Mary, is at the heart of the project.

Filming started in May as the club missed out on promotion to the top flight via the play-offs and will go on throughout this coming season as the Jags launch a tilt at the Championship title. While a TV crew was not inside the dressing room during the pressure of the play-offs in May as introductions were made, Record Sport understands it will happen during this campaign. They will be back for the first two games of the Championship season – at home to Morton and away to Raith – at the start of next month. Behind-the-scenes access to clubs such as Manchester City through All or Nothing on Amazon Prime and the FX series following Reynolds’ and Rob McElhenney’s takeover of Wrexham have brought in huge viewing figures.

Now the Maryhill outfit are next as the latest instalment delves into “football fandom and what it means to be passionate about a club that doesn’t always deliver results”, according to a release announcing the move.

Lifelong Jags fan and US-based investor Donald McClymont, who is on the board, will executive produce the project alongside Wessler. Wessler visited in January to get to know the club and returned Stateside convinced the project was one worth pursuing.

He said: “This story is the perfect antidote to the current climate of lavish spending and celebrity investors in football. This is a team that understands nobody is coming to rescue them from above and a fanbase which knows better than to take victory for granted.”

Sam Neave, most recently producer on HBO documentary “The Jinx – Part Two”, which aired on Sky this year, is the director behind it and was over in Scotland in May. Neave said: “As sports fans we don’t always get to pick our teams. Watching my first match at Firhill Stadium wasn’t some glamorous event but it immediately made me want to tell the story of the relationship between these fans and their team.”

McClymont said: “Partick Thistle has been around for almost 150 years and there’s no doubt in my mind that we belong in the Premiership. We’ve come desperately close to getting promoted the past two years and we’re all hoping this is the year we make it back up.”

It is still to be seen what platform it ends up on, with a release announcing the project to American audiences declaring it is “currently seeking acquisition for worldwide distribution”.
