This time last week we thought it was "coming home", until footy dreams were smashed at the Euros final when England lost to Spain.

Speculation has been rife about the fate of the squad and the manager, Gareth Southgate, following the defeat. But now, Southgate has announced he is bowing out.

The boss broke the news today (Tuesday, July 16). Having led the Three Lions for eight years, and steering the squad to the Euro finals twice in a row, 53-year-old Southgate's contract was set to expire later this year.

Now people are already talking about his successor, with some offering totally bonkers suggestions as to who it could be. It all started after a post was shared by VeryBritishProblems on X, reading: "Gareth Southgate has resigned. Who should be the next England manager? (Ridiculous answers only, please)."

As you'd expect, many people were quick to reply. And some of the suggestions have been totally wild. One quipped: "Personally, I'd like to see Mr Blobby step up." Someone else shared a picture of a lettuce alongside the words: "Liz Truss."

Another chimed in with: "My choice for his replacement is Boris Johnson, who will deliver an oven-ready World Cup in record time." Meanwhile, another said: "Certain that others have written the same thing but, of course, Mr Bean. There is no better person for the job."

Some fans did pitch football-related names like Gary Lineker and Harry Kane. They might not be everyone's top choice, but at least they know something about the game.

Some more mad suggestions included the likes of Miriam Margolyes, Gyles Brandreth and even Jacob Rees-Mogg. One punter suggested: "Danny Dyer, mainly for the post match interviews."

While another fan quipped: "Ted Lasso is clearly the man for the job. The success he achieved with AFC Richmond could easily be replicated at national level."
