James Tavernier is wanted by Trabzonspor in a shock move

Last month we exclusively revealed that the Ibrox side would consider letting Tavernier leave this summer.

It's understood English clubs are also interested in the goalscoring right-back and that any deal to take him to Turkey is far from a done deal.

Tavernier still has two years remaining on his contract with Gers and is heading into his testimonial year.

He signed in 2015 from Wigan Athletic and has since gone on to score 125 goals in 460 games for the Light Blues.

His nine years of service come with the caveat that he is now 32.

That will be a cause for concern for any interested party, as they know it's highly likely they wouldn't make a profit on the player in any way.

It's believed Tavernier has been offered a two-year deal by Trabzonspor and therefore it's possible he could retire at the expiration of his contract, if he doesn't leave as a free agent and join another club.

Rangers would be keen to make some cash from their skipper but according to Turkiye Gazetisi, the two clubs are still a distance apart in negotiations.

It's said Gers want €1million (£850,000) more than what Trabzonspor are offering for the player.

Furthermore, Trabzonspor technical chief Abdullah Avcı is said to be keen on a thorough medical for Tavernier given his age, as they are also interested in Boavista defender Pedro Malheiro, who is 23.

The medical, which is being described as a 'detailed health analysis', will be the deciding factor between a move for Tavernier or Malheiro, it's claimed.

Turkieye Gazetisi say Trabzonspor had already agreed on personal terms with Malheiro, who has four caps for the Portugal Under-21 team.

Giovanni van Bronkchorst was also linked with his old skipper after taking over at Besiktas last month. Tavernier flourished under van Bronckhorst in the Light Blues' run to the Europa League final in 2022.

He also also been touted to reunite with another former boss in Steven Gerrard, who would be keen for Tavernier to join in Saudi Arabia.
