Newcastle United new boy Miodrag Pivas has been handed a glowing reference from ex-Manchester United and Chelsea star Nemaja Matic.

Miodrag Pivas has arrived from FK Jedinstvo Ub and will give Newcastle something to think about as the 6ft 2in defender, who can also play midfield, arrives at the club hungry to prove a point. CEO Darren Eales is delighted with the signing and has tipped him to do great things at St James' Park.

And Pivas arrives at Newcastle having been backed by one his greatest ever countrymen Matic, who said: "He is a huge talent and serious potential.

"If he continues this way, he's on the path to the national team. In my opinion, we haven't seen a player with such predispositions since Nemanja Vidić and Bane Ivanović. A complete player and a top professional."

Pivas, who can also play centre-back, said: "It’s absolutely unbelievable to join such a big club like Newcastle United and I cannot wait to get started. I see the project of the club and it looks great which helped convince me to sign for Newcastle."

The 19-year-old talent negotiated successful talks last month with his deal cleared on Saturday morning. Pivas is believed to have been a recommendation of Toon star Alexander Isak.

Eales said: "Miodrag is a promising talent with high potential. Our recruitment network is continuing to watch young players like Miodrag around the world with a view to identifying and developing them into first team players of the future."
