Chelsea may try and tempt Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to Stamford Bridge with Kepa Arrizabalaga used as part of a swap deal despite a recent formal approach from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ittihad.
However, Real Madrid are yet to receive any approach from Chelsea for Lunin. Kepa is happy to sit and wait for Real Madrid - where he was loaned to last season - with Lunin’s potential exit paving the way for a return to the Spanish capital as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The 29-year-old originally joined Carlo Ancelotti's side last summer after Thibaut Courtois suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Kepa took on the responsibility of being the stand-in number one goalkeeper but a string of mistakes led to Lunin eventually replacing the loanee.
The 25-year-old made the position his own for much of the season, becoming a hero in Madrid’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final penalty shootout victory over the defending champions Manchester City. Lunin saved Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic’s penalties. Courtois then returned to play in the UEFA Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
Arrizabalaga himself seemed to think his time in Madrid was up posting several photographs from the season with the caption: “THANK YOU for all the support during the year Madridstas…No better way to end the season.”
On July 12, it was reported by The Athletic that Chelsea turned down an initial offer for the ‘keeper from Al Ittihad but talks were thought to be progressing. The former Athletic Club man is under contract at Chelsea until 2025.
The Blues currently have a range of shot-stoppers to choose from with Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, Gabriel Slonina, Marcus Bettinelli, and Lucas Bergstrom contracted to the club. No doubt, many may leave on loan or as part of permanent deals with Kepa expected to be one of them.
