Everton have been tipped to make a move for Kalvin Phillips as Amadou Onana closes in on a £50million transfer to Aston Villa. Fellow central midfielder Tim Iroegbunam made the switch in the opposite direction earlier this summer and made an encouraging Blues debut as a second half substitute in Friday’s 3-3 friendly draw at Sligo Rovers but given that the 21-year-old has only made a dozen Premier League appearances, Everton are being linked with more experienced further additions.

Keith Wyness, who served as Everton’s chief executive between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, reckons the Blues will fill the void left by Onana’s sale by bringing in Phillips. He told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “The whisper is they will move for Kalvin Phillips, who Everton have been linked with for a while before.

“That would bring great experience into the midfield. He’s not quite the Onana-type player, but he’s similar and would certainly give a lot of experience and steel in the midfield.

“That’s something we were perhaps missing a little bit last year. I think Sean (Dyche) will go for experience, someone like Phillips and that’s something we’ll have to keep an eye on.”

On July 15, BBC Sport reported that Phillips – who had a loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of 2023/24 – was expected back at Manchester City for the start of pre-season training and while he was likely to go on their summer tour of the USA (which he has done), it seems impossible that he will stay at the Etihad for the forthcoming campaign. The ECHO understands there is some interest from Everton in taking Phillips on loan with Dyche a long-time admirer of the player.
