Everton player ratings as Youssef Chermiti impresses again but plenty struggle in Salford loss
Player ratings from Connor O'Neill after Everton's pre-season clash with Salford City on Saturday
Salford have beaten Everton 2-1 in a pre-season friendly.
The Blues squandered a number of chances in the opening period, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure all missing the target from good positions.
However, James Garner was able to find the net after 50 minutes from a free-kick, curling an effort past the 'keeper from the edge of the penalty area. The hosts level after 68 minutes, when Eli Campbell turned into his own net when trying to clear a rebounded header.
With the clock ticking down, Dan Chesters latched onto a pass in behind to win it for the League Two side. Here is how the Blues fared...
Joao Virginia - 7
Produced a routine save to deny Kelly Nmai in the first-half, but apart from that, he was largely untested. His communication was impressive, though.
Seamus Coleman - 6
Played a key role in one of Everton’s good openings in the first-half. Also produced a really good tackle inside the box as Curtis Tilt charged forward.
Mason Holgate - 5
Guilty of giving the ball away which led to Salford’s best chance in the first-half. He almost caught out again a few minutes later, but he did go on to produce a good block to keep out a goal-bound effort.
Michael Keane - 7
Allowed Nmai to get across him for his chance early on, but apart from that, he didn’t put a foot wrong.
Ashley Young - 6
The veteran was almost caught out when he attempted to let the ball run out of play and stupidly gave away a silly corner a few minutes later. Much more comfortable on the right that the left.
Jack Harrison - 7
Looked to make things happen from an attacking point of view and put two good balls into the box that caused Salford problems. Can not knock his worth rate.
James Garner - 7
Played a little more deeper than he usually does, but he kept things simple and was always looking to get on the ball. Opened the scoring with a fine free-kick into the bottom corner.
Abdoulaye Doucoure - 6
Wasted a really good chance to open the scoring and was also guilty of messing up a counter-attack in the second-half. However, he did look to get forward as much as he could and link the play.
Dwight McNeil - 6
Struggled to link up with Young down the left. Often found himself cutting inside rather than getting down the line.
Beto - 6
Another who wasted a good chance to open the scoring in the first-half. However, he twice set up two really good attacks with some fine forward play. Just needs to start taking his chances.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 6
Missed a sitter after breaking clear on goal, but like Beto, made things happen and was a constant threat. However, he will be disappointed that he never managed to get his name on the scoresheet.
Substitutes
Harry Tyler - 6
Produced a great save just minutes after coming on and could do nothing to prevent either of Salford's goals.
Roman Dixon - 6
Offered plenty of energy down the right and is certainly a player Everton supporters should be keeping an eye on.
Elijah Campbell - 6
Showed a great piece of recovery play after initially letting the ball bounce.
Yousef Chermiti - 7
Won the free-kick that led to Everton's opener and showed some nice touches that resulted in good moments for his side. Make the right impression this summer.
Neal Maupay - 6
Involved in messing up a really good counter-attacking chance after Dixon broke clear following a Salford corner.
Harrison Armstrong - 6
Cleared one off the line in the closing stages, but before that he did twice mess up a good opportunity to play in Okoronkwo after he broke clear.
Tim Iroegbunam - 5
His second appearance for the Blues after joining from Aston Villa. Clearly still working his way up to full fitness.
Francis Okoronkwo - 6
Was a constant threat after coming on, however his decision-making twice let him down when he got into good areas.
Tyler Onyango - 7
Operating at centre-back, he didn't put a foot wrong and took control of a young and inexperienced backline. Can see why Duncan Ferguson thinks so highly of him.
Jenson Metcalfe - 6
Produced a really good block to deny Jon Taylor.
