"More to come" - The Joe Willock prediction that will excite Newcastle United supporters

Newcastle United star Joe Willock lights up the big stage in Japan as he ends injury nightmare

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is expecting much more from Joe Willock this season - with his injury nightmare now behind him.

The former Arsenal midfielder was sidelined for the majority of last season with hamstring and achilles problems. But he made a successful return in the 4-1 win in Japan against Urawa Red Diamonds with two assists in the stunning victory.

Looking ahead to the new season for Willock, Howe said: "I think Joe will be the first to admit that there is more to come. He's been training over a period of time but there is nothing like games.

"You can see his qualities. The assist for the first goal, the breaks from midfield, the energetic box-to-box ability - he's a goal threat and goal creator as well. "Massive player: we've missed him and that was his first steps back today."

Willock came off at half-time but the substitution was planned and he reported now fresh issues after the game. The midfielder said: "Great to be back, I think I’m still building and I’ve been doing work on the training ground to get me in a place to get back on the pitch. I’m really grateful for the staff at Newcastle and everyone that has helped me to get here and hopefully now I can continue playing and go into the season strong.

"It was good, a good performance. Every game we want to win to build up momentum towards our first game against Southampton. It was a brilliant atmosphere in the stadium as well and I’m thankful for the people who came to support us and it’s been a good trip so far."
