Kasper Schmeichel's one word Celtic answer on why he's here as he rejects retirement tour theory

Schmeichel isn't looking beyond the end of the season yet but seems determined it won't be the end

Kasper Schmeichel is motivated by one thing and one thing only; winning. And the Celtic keeper isn't in Scotland to kick-off his retirement tour.

The Dane penned a one-year deal with the Premiership champions, replacing Joe Hart as the Parkhead. He saw the ovation and respect Hart was afforded when he bowed out last May, but Schmeichel is more interested in picking up the same medals and trophies as his old Manchester City mate.

He won a Premier League title and FA Cup with Leicester City - the latter under Brendan Rodgers - and adding to his collection is the only thing he's concerned about now he's made the move north of the border. He said: "Winning. It's the only thing that motivates me. I've had some incredible experiences in my life in terms of winning things. And there is nothing that gets up in the morning more than the thought of having those days.

"Those days when as a team you're together, you've won something and you've accomplished something together. And you get to share that with your teammates, with your family, with the fans. Those days are few and far between in the football world but they last forever in the memories. That's what drives me every day."

When asked if that meant he was targeting a Treble, Schmeichel chose his words carefully: "There's a rich history of winning here so I'll do whatever I can to help continue."

Despite seeing Hart hang up his gloves in the summer, Schmeichel insists that hasn't even entered his head at 37-years-old. "I think it's down to myself and my desire," he said. "Physically I feel great, mentally I feel good so a slong as that's there, I don't see any reason to be even thinking about that (retirement).

"I've always said that if you are physically able and you have the amount of experience that I do now, then it's only an advantage to any team. The day the physical side starts to drop or the mental side starts to drop, that's when you have to start looking at it.

"But I don't feel like that yet. I don't feel the age that I am - I definitely don't feel that! If you ask any of the lads they'll say that I don't really act like that either.

"If you love what you do, you've got to keep doing it because as a footballer, once you're done, you're done. You're never going to be able to come back. I don't want to be sitting there one day having made a decision that's irreversible. So as long as I'm able toplay and I love playing, I'll keep going."
