Unseen Todd Cantwell transfer request reason floated as Rangers told Morgan Whittaker timeline

The playmaker is on the way out of Ibrox amid Philippe Clement's rebuild

There is a hidden "narrative" behind Todd Cantwell's decision to submit a Rangers transfer request, according to pundit Shelley Kerr.

The playmaker looks set to pull the curtain down on his Ibrox career having been relegated to the B team after expressing his desire to leave the club to boss Philippe Clement. The Belgian boss went public with the decision from the 26-year-old last week with Cardiff City touted as a potential destination - while Clement has left the door open for a U-turn from Cantwell.

But Rangers TV pundit and former Scotland boss Kerr reckons there is "another narrative" going on behind the scenes at Ibrox - which could stem all the way back to The Rangers boss subbing Cantwell off after just 35 minutes in their clash with Aris Limassol in November last year. Kerr told the Go Radio Football Show: "It'll be interesting what the narrative is and what the context is.

"Rangers as a club have highlighted that it's a transfer request - which I like because they have been very open and honest about it. When Ranges first signed him he looked really promising and had a few really good performances, and then you look back and there was one of the games he got taken off and he wasn't best pleased about it.

"At the time he recovered from it and added a little bit of value, but there is something that is actually going on in his head as to why he doesn't want to be there. I always think it a player doesn't want to be at Rangers or Celtic there is something else going on in there. There is another narrative to this I think."

Rangers target Morgan Whittaker won’t be leaving Plymouth Argyle in time to line up for the Light Blues in the first game of the Scottish Premiership campaign against Hears on Saturday. Record Sport revealed the 23-year-old is back on the Light Blues radar - but there is no imminent timeline in place for a deal according to Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney.

Pressed on if there would be any transfer movement before Saturday's league opener by the Western Morning News, Rooney said: "Probably not before Saturday, no. We are aware of certain players who potentially we want to bring to the club, and we will try to move on them but I think Saturday will be a little bit too early for that."
