Joe Gomez transfer could change Liverpool Anthony Gordon stance after £45m deal agreed

Liverpool agreed to a deal in principle with Newcastle for Joe Gomez earlier this summer and the defender is still attracting significant Premier League interest

Premier League transfer interest in Joe Gomez could force Liverpool to change their transfer stance. The defender is understood to be attracting interest from around the league after a £45 million move to Newcastle United collapsed in late June.

The Reds reached that agreement as part of a deal to sign Anthony Gordon for £75 million. Instead, the North East club cashed in on Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, which allowed them to keep Gordon.

Newcastle are reportedly in talks with Crystal Palace over signing Marc Guehi now, but they are not the only club to show interest in Liverpool's longest-serving player this summer. However, no new bids have been received amid the significant interest in Gomez.

If any offers arise then the Reds and their defender will have decisions to make over the next month. And should the England international conclude that belatedly leaving would be for the best, Liverpool's need to sign a central defender would only grow.

The club showed interest in Leny Yoro earlier this summer but did not pursue the player, who has since signed for Manchester United. Signing a new centre-back has not been a priority this summer despite the departure of Joel Matip.

But if Gomez also goes, only Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Virgil van Dijk become the three recognised first-team options, meaning the club may have to reinforce the position as a priority in the transfer market instead of spending on the likes of Gordon. Nat Phillips and Sepp van den Berg could be sold for the best part of £30 million, while the expectation is that Billy Koumetio and Rhys Williams will also move on.

The Reds may have mainly used just two of Konate, Quansah and Van Dijk last season because Matip missed much of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament while Gomez was filling in at full-back, but entering Arne Slot's first season in the same situation is something the club cannot countenance.
